George Richard Ford, 83, died Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville. He was born in Huntington,
Mass., to Richard F. and Josephine Hannigan Ford, who preceded him in death. Mr. Ford attended Huntington schools and
graduated from Huntington High School. He served in the Army during World War II, reaching the grade of Staff Sergeant. He
served in the Third Army 284th Field Artillery Division, seeing action in both France and Germany. He also fought in the Battle of
the Bulge. At the end of his military career, he served in the military police for General George C. Patton in Badtolz, Germany. He
was one of the liberators of Buchenwald Concentration Camp in Buchenwald, Germany. He received an honorable discharge in
1946. On Sept. 11, 1947, he married Annie Maria Zierer, whom he met after WWII in Munich, Germany. She preceded him in
death on Oct. 19, 2001. After WWII, Mr. Ford made his home in Huntington, Mass. He was a partner in Vogform Tool and Die in
Westfield, Mass. He opened his own business, Valley Tool and Die, in Holyoke, Mass., in 1968, and moved this business to
Chicopee, Mass., in 1980. He was a member of Evangelical Church and the German Club. Mr. Ford served as the Huntington
Water Commissioner for many years, and as a volunteer fire fighter. In 1988, he moved to Statesville, after his retirement. He
joined the Hurst Turner American Legion Post 65, and was a member of the American Legion for 50 years. On Nov. 23, 2002, he
married Pamela Edwards, who survives. He is also survived by Homer Edwards, father-in-law; Renée Rogers, sister-in-law;
Richard Rogers, nephew; Alyson (Brian) Voelske; and great-nephew and niece, Landon Voelske and Lillian Voelske. Visitation will
be held from 6-7 pm. this evening at Landmark Church of God. Funeral services will follow at 7:15 p.m. at Landmark Church of
God. A private graveside service and burial will be held in Huntington, Mass. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials
be made to Hospice of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625; or to Landmark Church of God, 2200 E. Brand
Street, Statesville, NC 28677. Nicholson Funeral Home is serving the family of George Richard Ford.
